The greatest factor affecting how much heat a building requires is the outdoor temperature. Even in a well-insulated building, the heat required to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature increases as the outdoor temperature decreases. Heating systems are designed to provide enough heat to make up for the heat loss that occurs on the coldest days of the year. For most of the year, this capacity is much too large, potentially wasting heat and increasing cost. A tekmar Outdoor Reset control continuously adjusts the boiler temperature to match the current outdoor conditions. For most of the year, this substantially reduces fuel consumption, improving comfort and saving you money. Outdoor reset is a feature of a wide range of tekmar control types including boiler, steam, mixing, and house controls.

The rate of heat loss from a building is affected by the outdoor air temperature. In mild weather the building loses less heat while in cold weather the building loses more heat.

Without a tekmar Steam Control, a steam system operates as if every day is the coldest day of the year. When the only method of control is a thermostat, the system operates at 100% until the building overheats and the thermostat switches the system off. When the room temperature falls below the thermostat setting, the system is once again operated at 100%, without regard to how much heat the building actually needs.
tekmar Steam Controls use outdoor reset to calculate how much heat is required to keep the building comfortable. In mild weather, the control reduces the hourly running time, using less fuel while reducing the chance of over heating. Windows can now be kept closed because the building in no longer too hot. To save even more energy, take advantage of the built-in setback timer and optional indoor sensor. When connected to an indoor sensor, the control can fine tune calculations to provide the ultimate level of efficiency and comfort.

Multi-Stage Control with Outdoor Reset

Multiple heat source staging is typically used in commercial and larger residential buildings. There are numerous advantages to splitting the heating plant into smaller sections instead of one large boiler.

• A tekmar staging control limits the number of stages operating to match what the building requires at the time. This means for most of the year, some of the boilers are shut off; therefore not using any fuel.
• Maintenance is made easier as the heating plant does not need to be completely shut down to service one boiler since redundant backup boilers are available.
• Systems can be designed to take advantage of the most efficient heat sources first, using backup sources only when needed. Some even make use of solar thermal, geothermal and wood fire boilers as primary stages, with traditional boilers as a back up for the coldest days.
• In some cases an older boiler can be kept as a last stage heat source when making efficiency upgrades. A boiler set to operate as a last stage is only used on the coldest days. This allows for a compromise between up front expense and efficiency improvements.
• The size of a single boiler required to heat a large building can be costly to move and install. Creating a system of the same capacity using multiple, smaller boilers makes it easier to transport and install in the plant room.

With a Gateway 483, you can view and adjust your system heating and cooling settings from anywhere in the world using a web browser.
A Gateway 482 can provide access to thermostat settings through a home automation system. This allows you to view and adjust room temperature settings with the same remote control, touch screen or software application that controls lighting, entertainment and security settings.
With the User Switch 479 option, a button press can enable all thermostats to save energy when you leave for a holiday, and set them back to normal temperature when you return.
